Why Is Garlic Harmful for Pets?
Garlic belongs to the allium family and packs a higher concentration of organosulfur compounds than onions, making it even more toxic to pets by rupturing red blood cells and causing oxidative damage. Pets may show vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, weakness, elevated heart rate, and Heinz body anemia within days. While tiny culinary amounts are sometimes debated, vets recommend zero tolerance. Doses of 5 grams per kilogram of body weight can be fatal for dogs, less for cats. Avoid garlic powder in treats or broths. If exposed, induce vomiting only under vet guidance and monitor bloodwork.
