Why Is Chocolate Harmful for Pets?

Chocolate poses a serious threat to pets due to theobromine and caffeine, stimulants their livers metabolize slowly or not at all. These compounds overstimulate the heart and central nervous system, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, restlessness, tremors, seizures, and in severe cases heart failure or death. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate, and cocoa mulch are the most toxic due to higher concentrations. Even small amounts (one ounce of dark chocolate per 10 pounds of body weight) can be lethal for dogs. Cats are also at risk but less likely to eat it. Prevention is key: store chocolate securely, educate family members, and contact a vet or pet poison hotline immediately if ingestion occurs.
