Why Are Scallions Harmful for Pets?
Scallions (green onions) are alliums loaded with N-propyl disulfide and sulfoxides that damage red blood cells, causing hemolytic anemia in dogs and cats. Symptoms hit within days: vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, pale gums, rapid breathing, and dark urine. Even small amounts (half an ounce per pound of body weight) can be toxic, especially in salads or soups. Cats are particularly vulnerable. Keep them away from gardens and kitchens. Rush to the vet for blood tests and supportive care if ingested.
