Why Are Persimmons Harmful for Pets?

Unripe persimmons form hard, indigestible phytobezoars from concentrated tannins that swell in the stomach, blocking intestines and causing persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, lethargy, and life-threatening obstructions requiring surgical removal. Ripe fruit carries lower risk but sharp seeds pose choking hazards or further blockages. Dogs, rabbits, and tortoises most affected due to foraging habits. Always cut open, remove seeds/pits completely, and seek immediate vet evaluation with X-rays if ingestion suspected to prevent perforation or peritonitis.
