Why Are Lemons Harmful for Pets?
Lemons contain high levels of psoralens, essential oils like limonene and linalool, plus citric acid that severely irritate the gastrointestinal tract, skin, and mucous membranes in pets. Common symptoms include immediate vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, depression, and sensitivity to sunlight leading to burns or dermatitis on contact areas. Larger ingestions risk central nervous system depression, low blood pressure, collapse, liver strain, or even coma in extreme cases; birds and reptiles face respiratory distress from oils. Dogs, cats, birds, and reptiles metabolize these compounds poorly, with peels/rinds posing choking hazards or obstructions. Keep all citrus trees/plants inaccessible, rinse mouth thoroughly if exposed, block sunlight exposure, and contact a vet or poison hotline immediately for decontamination protocols like activated charcoal or IV fluids.
