Why Are Leeks Harmful for Pets?

Leeks contain allyl disulfide and other thiosulfates that oxidize hemoglobin in pet blood cells, impairing oxygen transport and causing hemolytic anemia. Signs emerge gradually: vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, jaundice, and collapse. Dogs eating leek soup or scraps face risks at 15 to 30 grams per kilogram body weight. Cats are hypersensitive. They are common in soups and stir-fries, so double-check labels. Secure storage and prompt veterinary blood tests are essential for treatment.
