Why Are Chives Harmful for Pets?
Chives, a green onion relative, release sulfoxides that trigger the same red blood cell destruction as other alliums and result in anemia, lethargy, rapid heartbeat, weakness, and discolored urine. Though less studied than onions, even small nibbles from gardens or salads can harm cats and dogs, with toxicity building over repeated low exposures. They are sneaky in dishes like omelets or garnishes. Eliminate chives from your kitchen and yard. Immediate vet intervention with activated charcoal or blood transfusions may be needed for recovery.
